THE STORY

Mikael Frödin began his journey in the fly fishing business back in the 70’s with his first venture, International Fly Tying. As a confident and ambitious young angler and fly tier, he found success in selling flies beyond Sweden's borders. However, he soon realized that his personal reputation overshadowed the company's name. In 1985, Frödinflies was established, marking the beginning of a new chapter. Over the years, Mikael tied countless flies, did some writing and guiding, all while making ends meet. Despite the challenges, he remained steadfast in his passion for fly fishing. After some years, he was "lucky" to catch quite a few good fish, and the fly fishing industry found him, wanting to make all kinds of deals. Through the years Mikael continuously prioritized integrity and long-term partnerships.

“In 1985, Frödinflies was established”

After becoming more well-known, people began to listen to his ideas even more, and it became a part of the contracts that the companies had the first refusal on his ideas. Slowly, a few of Mikael’s ideas turned into new products. At the same time, the companies he worked with sold his already existing products, starting with his clear FITS Tubing. In 1994, Mikael became a father for the first time, and in 1997, his second son was born. He brought both Gustaf and Jakob along salmon rivers from their first days, making for some hectic but memorable times with diapers, screaming kids and screaming reels. In 2004, he presented the coloured FITS Tube System, making world news with tubing available in many colours. The year after, the first turbo cone was introduced, changing tube flies for good. By then, he had developed a bigger range of products, and the royalties from the company handling the sales grew quite a bit. A few more products came out, including the SALAR range of hooks, the yellow SALAR fly boxes, the foam spools, and the first commercially tied flies designed by Mikael.

The indisputable Pahtakorva

A Family Business

Both of Mikael’s boys joined him on fishing trips from their first day, and their mum, Helena, was at this stage a pretty good salmon angler with several 20 lbs under her belt. Mikael says he has so many great memories from when his kids started fishing. He often says that it’s a father’s responsibility to teach his kids what’s important in life – like catching Atlantic salmon on the fly.

Jakob, 10 years, River Aa

Early, it was obvious that Jakob, Mikael’s youngest, was the one who liked fishing the most. He proved to have the right feel for casting a fly line and handling bigger fish. Jakob was like a little mascot, tying flies with Mikael at some of the big fairs from the age of 7. When he was just 8 years old, he landed his first 20 lbs Atlantic salmon. Mikael’s best buddy, Håkan Norling, took care of him on the Kharlovka and Litza rivers during one of Mikael’s Master Classes when he was 16. "The kid is too bloody good", Håkan said after the first days, with Jakob catching more fish than him. And the years have passed; Jakob, now 27, started the new Frödinflies company together with Mikael in 2016. The unique mix of digitally influenced youth and lifelong fly tying and salmon fishing experience seems to be a good combination, developing the company in the right direction.

The New Company

Mikael’s cooperation with the company he was working with was slowing down, and changes in the industry made it clear that it was time to move on. Either he would let the “copycats” selling replicas of his original ideas dominate the market, or he would take action to reclaim it. The foundation of the FITS system and some of the SSS material was already laid.

The eagerly anticipated new beginning led to the establishment of the new company to bring Mikael’s ideas to life. This venture aimed to serve shops as a wholesaler, with initial changes including transitioning all cones from brass to tungsten. This upgrade improved balance and quality, resonating strongly with fly tiers worldwide. Under the slogan “There’s only one original”, the company swiftly regained much of the cone and tubing market in Europe. Tiers and shops responded enthusiastically, sparking rapid growth. The Frödin Fly Design range expanded with new patterns and designs, while the introduction of new materials elevated quality to new heights, meeting the heightened demands for materials and tying techniques. Undoubtedly, Frödinflies now boasts some of the best commercially tied flies available.

In summary, it's been a lot of hard work, perhaps even a few less days of fishing, but the new company has performed admirably. Mikael and Jakob have quickly established a small yet robust fly fishing company that sets trends in the industry. They continue to focus solely on products rooted in ideas from the Frödin family.

With the launch of the new company, we assembled some of the most dedicated and experienced anglers and fly tiers we know – a group of highly talented individuals who appreciate and believe in our products and company. They are invaluable assets for providing feedback, developing new products, and spreading the Frödinflies ethos to anglers worldwide.

Vision & Mission

The future holds tremendous excitement with numerous innovative developments on the horizon. We firmly believe in progress; the art of catching Atlantic salmon on a fly has existed since the 15th century, and we're dedicated to contributing products and techniques to refine the pursuit of modern fly fishing and fly tying. If we don't believe a product will improve upon what's already available, we won't offer it to you.

We are committed to environmental stewardship, advocating for the conservation of ecosystems and a thriving population of wild salmon. Our dedication to fighting for free-flowing rivers and wild fish remains fundamental to our company's ethos and future direction. Without the presence of wild fish and healthy river ecosystems, the tradition of fly fishing for Atlantic salmon could be lost forever. It is our profound hope that future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy salmon fishing in healthy river systems around the globe.
