BOOKS & FILMS

It’s now 28 years ago my first book was published, it’s crazy how time just flies away. Last year I finally presented some of my fly patterns in “My Salmon Flies” of course I am happy with the fact that our second edition now soon is sold out. I like my writing and among many interesting projects is the “three book project” that I am right in the middle of. First book will be “The Perfect Drift” my book sharing my experiences on how I prefer to fish my fly. Trying to share 6000 days of salmon fishing into something like a guidance on how to be more effective on the river. It’s hard to learn to be a good salmon angler, it takes time, here I try to share my experience. The second book project is maybe a bit unconventional, it’s a project about me and my life as a professional salmon angler. The third book is more exact in its form. 50 of my best flies, the patterns and ideas behind them, stories and influences that made them see the light. In total I think this project is very challenging and triggers me to doing my very best.

When it comes to film and TV I have done quite a bit, some good and some maybe not so good. There are many plans for the future small film productions that will show up here and also one fishing school “master class” that might one day be reality. We will try to give you at least one film per month on the web, some on tying and some from fishings around the world. In this little section you find stuff that has been sold and, in most cases, still are. When it comes to “Classic Salmon Flies” it’s been sold out for many years, but we still have a few copies of the leather bound limited edition signed numbered and containing an original classic fly. Following are some of the best productions.

Classic Salmon Flies

BOOK, 1991

Classic Salmon Flies is the first book to present the best known of the fully dressed classic salmon flies in words and pictures. These specially selected flies dating mainly from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were compost by old masters suck as George M. Kelson, Francis Francis, William Blacker and Dr. T.E. Pryce-Tannatt. The book gives both the original patterns and there numerous variants. It is therefore a source of inspiration for those who enjoy tying flies in the great tradition, as well as for all who are interested in the history of fly tying and in the creators’ ideas behind the patterns and their effectiveness. Classic Salmon Flies discusses 165 flies with the help of expert photography. They are works of clever and exquisite handicraft, tied on nineteenth century hooks with the identical materials prescribed by their inventors. Many of these exotic feathers are almost unobtainable today, a fact which makes this book even more valuable. The author, for several years a professional salmon fly tier and a guide to many of the worlds best salmon waters, has devoted much effort to the fascinating, reliable text and to tying every fly in the original manner.

My Salmon Flies

BOOK, 2017

After a life with an obsession for salmon flies Mikael Frödin now for the first time put his collection of innovative fly patterns together. “My Salmon Flies” contains 67 patterns and variations. It’s a lifetime of both fishing and fly tying experience, flies that have taken salmon in all conditions all over the world. A must-have for every serious salmon angler and fly tier. The little book is made as a wire-o pattern collection to be easy to use on the fly tying table. Choose pattern, fold it up, read about it - and go ahead and tie it.

Modern Salmon Flies – Tying on Hooks

DVD, 2003

This is the first of two films, where Mikael ties and describes how to make the perfect hair wing fly on double hooks. As a professional tier with more than 100.000 flies to his credit, Mikael here reveals all his secrets and tricks. The film is very structured, and nothing is left at random. Turn by turn, you can follow the flies being tied.

Modern Salmon Flies – Tying on Tubes

DVD, 2004

The second film by Mikael Frödin. This time he shares his knowledge in tying great fishing flies on tubes. He shows you all his small tricks and basic skills, making you a master fly tier. It is easy to follow the systematic instructions, as the flies slowly grow into finished masterpieces. You will learn to tie everything from Micro tubes to large silhouette flies for night fishing.

Make ‘Em Swim

DVD, 2008

Mikael Frödin shows you how to use the FITS tubing System to its full potential. Learn to tie flies that swim better than you imagined possible. The film covers everything from the simplest to more complex tube flies. You will be part of it all in both thoughts and action, gaining a better understanding for the use of this ingenious system and the latest tying materials, including fluorescent tubing and the FITS turbo and tungsten cones.

Giants of the Em

DVD, 2009

This is actually not one of my own projects. Mountain Media in cooperation with the mansion of Em were going to record a film by the river Em – the one of a kind sea trout water. The fact that I’ve had “good luck” while fishing this classic river, resulted in my being followed by two cameras during my yearly fall visit to the river. My experience of making fishing films and TV tells me that catching the big fish at the right moment is close to impossible! This time everything worked out right. In a couple of evenings, I managed to get in a few really nice sea trout where the biggest of them was the biggest I have ever landed – fantastic! I think the film holds good quality and shows a good picture of one of Sweden’s most internationally known rivers, one of the world’s most unique fishing waters.
