Olli Rautiainen

NUMMELA, FINLAND

Olli’s father took him pike fishing already when he was a little boy. He feels very thankful for his father for bringing the passion of fishing into his life. A lot later, around 2005, Olli went to watch people fly fishing and catching big sea trout in a small river that ran through his home town in southern Finland. That inspired him to buy his own rod and he was hooked right away for silvery salmonids. Olli’s passion is nowadays salmon fly fishing with double handed fly rods, especially in Scandinavian salmon rivers. Among Olli’s favourite rivers you find Byske in northern Sweden. A river well known for its powerful and big Baltic salmon.

In his free time, when he’s not fishing, you most likely find Olli tying flies. In Olli’s opinion the fly is the most important element in salmon fishing and therefor he spends a lot of time making them. He ties salmon flies all year around and tube flies are his specialty. Olli attend to always use materials of the best possible quality. Materials that make tying more enjoyable and keeps the passion burning. He likes to design and test new fly models with different colour combinations. It’s hard for him to choose one favorite fly is but among the patterns he prefers are the Banana fly in bright weather conditions and his own pattern called "Raikuli" at night time.

– For me salmon fishing and fly tying is not just a hobby, it is a big part of my daily life, Olli says.
